Reechoing the Thematic Preoccupation of Soji Obebe’s A Mind to Atone

Literature serves as a vital mirror for societal reflection, education, and social commentary. In Nigerian literature, successive generations of writers have addressed distinct socio-political and cultural realities, from pre-colonial traditions to post-colonial struggles and modern governance. This paper examines the thematic preoccupations of Soji Obebe’s A Mind to Atone and positions it within contemporary Nigerian literary discourse. Through a text-directed analysis, the study explores how Obebe interrogates moral decline, religious hypocrisy, systemic corruption, child neglect, kidnapping, and marital infidelity. Furthermore, applying psychoanalytic theory and moral philosophy, this paper shows how the central theme of atonement and restitution serves as a necessary framework for personal psychological relief and broader societal healing in modern Nigeria.
