Twitter Suspension and Its Lifting: A Fairy Tale on Freedom of Expression in Nigeria

This paper titled “Twitter Suspension and Its Lifting: a Fairy Tale on Freedom of Expression in Nigeria”. Specifically examined how twitter suspension and lifting negate freedom of expression in Nigeria. Literatures were reviewed in line with the problematic. The paper is anchored on the descriptive research design, utilizing the instrumentality of secondary methods of data collection and the theory of state consequentialism as propounded by Jeremy Bentham (1789), John Stuart Mill (1861), and Henry Sidgwick (1907). The paper found that freedom of expression is substantially restricted in Nigeria. Hence, freedom of expression is a theoretical exercise as against the practical reality preached by the principle of freedom of expression in Nigeria. Therefore twitter suspension and its lifting has significantly hampered the dictates of freedom of expression in Nigeria. The paper recommends that the abuse of freedom of expression and other fundamental human rights by public officials should be strongly checkmated through vacation of office occupied.
