Effects of Globalization and Technology on the Church in Africa: A Study of Nigerian Church

Abstract: When Globalization and Technology are mentioned in Africa, contextually in Nigerian Church, it is a situation of mixed feelings as many considered their emergence as threats to the values of African Cultural heritage and Africentric Christianity. African Indigenous Churches/Pentecostalism upholds the values of truthfulness, justice, brotherhood, peace, integrity and probity as the way of life. Most people care for what they do and how they do it in order not to incur the wrath of God upon themselves. But some African Christian thinkers, especially, in Nigeria are  of the opinions that these values seemed to have been corrupted at the emergence of the “Duo”. Worst of all, it was discovered that the contemporary Africans care-less for life and have no fear of the creator as consequential effects of Globalization and Technology. Although there are other Africans (Nigerians) of different school of thought, they opine that Globalization and Technology have helped the world, contextually the church and her leadership in Africa (Nigeria) for easy communication and so on thereby making people to see and believe in God’s work through what they hear and see electronically. All these qualities geared up the spiritual, economic, and the holistic development of the African nations Contextually the Nigerian Church and nations. Thus this paper investigates the positive and negative effects of Globalization and Technology on the church in Africa: A Study of Nigerian Church. The methodology adopted for this paper consists: Socio-historical, interview, internet explorations and narrative approaches.
