Urbanization and Biodiversity Conservation: Assessing the Ecological Value of Urban Ecosystems

Urbanization is one of the major drivers of biodiversity loss, yet urban ecosystems can provide important habitats and ecological services that contribute to conservation and human well-being. This position paper assesses the ecological value of urban ecosystems and examines how urban development can be reconciled with biodiversity conservation. The study adopts a qualitative methodology based on a review of scientific literature, policy documents, and case studies on urban biodiversity, focusing on green spaces, wetlands, urban forests, gardens, and other semi-natural habitats. The assessment considers species richness, habitat connectivity, ecosystem services, and the effects of urban pressures such as habitat fragmentation, pollution, invasive species, and land-use change. The findings indicate that well-managed urban ecosystems can support diverse plants and animal species, enhance ecological connectivity, regulate local climate, improve air and water quality, and provide recreational and educational benefits. However, poorly planned urban expansion can significantly reduce habitat quality and biodiversity. This paper therefore recommends that integrating biodiversity conservation into urban planning through the protection and restoration of green and blue infrastructure, creation of ecological corridors, use of native plant species, sustainable land-use practices, and regular biodiversity monitoring. Strengthening environmental policies, community participation, and collaboration between planners, conservationists, and local authorities is also essential for achieving biodiversity-friendly and resilient cities.
