Assessment of Housing Quality in Peri-Urban Settlements of Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria

The study assessed housing quality in Peri-urban settlements of Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. It examined the socio-economic characteristics of the residents on housing quality and influence of housing quality on resident’s satisfaction in the study area. Data were drawn from the survey of residents in the study area. Six (6) Peri-urban settlements within Ikorodu LGA were identified as the study area. A total of four hundred and sixty-seven respondents were surveyed using structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as percentages, frequency tables, cross tabulation, Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Scheffé tests. The results from the analysis indicate that quality of housing varies significantly across the LCDAs in the study area, F (5, 461) = 82.087, p< .001. The mean difference is significant at 0.05 level, with Ikorodu Central exhibiting the highest housing quality and Imota LCDA the lowest. It is recommended that government should prioritize these areas for immediate housing interventions through subsidized renovation programs to improve building materials and facilities, public-private partnerships to develop affordable and durable housing. Direct more resources to lower-ranked LCDAs such as Imota and Ijede, while sustaining improvements in higher-ranked areas like Ikorodu Central and develop customized development plans that reflect the unique challenges and priorities of each LCDA
