Culinary tourism, defined as travel motivated by food experiences, has emerged as a vital mechanism for cultural preservation and economic development in Tamil Nadu, India. This study aims to explore how Tamil Nadu’s diverse cuisine, encompassing Chettinad’s spicy dishes, Madurai’s Street food, and temple prasadam, serves as a cultural conduit and economic catalyst within the tourism sector. Specifically, it examines the role of culinary experiences in reinforcing regional identity, generating revenue, and addressing challenges such as hygiene perceptions and infrastructural limitations. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research integrates a survey of 150 tourists across Chennai, Madurai, and Chettinad to assess motivations, satisfaction, and spending on food-related activities, supplemented by qualitative case studies of Madurai’s food festivals and Chettinad’s homestay dining. Secondary data from Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation reports and academic literature further contextualize the findings. Preliminary results indicate that 70% of tourists are motivated by Tamil Nadu’s cuisine, with food festivals contributing 32.6% to culinary tourism revenue, aligning with India’s $23 billion market valuation in 2023. Culturally, authentic experiences like temple cuisine enhance tourists’ appreciation of Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian heritage, fostering local pride. Economically, culinary tourism supports small-scale agriculture and job creation, though rural areas face accessibility barriers. Challenges include hygiene concerns (noted by 40% of respondents) and limited marketing of rural cuisines. The study recommends developing structured food trails, leveraging social media promotion, and implementing food safety initiatives like FSSAI’s Clean Street Food project to enhance Tamil Nadu’s culinary tourism potential. These findings underscore the need for strategic interventions to sustain cultural and economic benefits while preserving authenticity.
